303 Oppenheim, E. Phillips Jacob's Ladder
A. L. Burt Company 1921 Hardcover Good in Fair dust jacket
This book is in good used condition with fading on blue cloth boards and spine and a bookshop stamp on the front endpapers. The DJ, now protected in a poly cover, has significant wear and edge chips and is missing a rather large piece at the spine taking out the text of the title (the title on the book spine, however is visible) and three letters of the title on the front. The cover image is intact. ; Oppenheim was a prolific and popular writer who published over 100 novels from the late 1800's to the 1930's. While he is remembered today primarily for his spy and thrillers written later in his career, he wrote many entertaining melodramatic and romantic adventures. This is a good example of such an adventure. Please contact us for photos. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 303 pages

305 Paustovsky, Konstantin Selected Stories
Progress Publishers Moscow 1974 First Edition; Second Printing Hardcover Very Good in Good+ dust jacket
This book is in very good condition with a DJ, now protected in a mylar cover, in really good shape with the exception of miniscule tears at bottom of spine and light fading and wear. ; This is an example of the literature that the USSR was exporting during the cold war, and, for that reason alone, is interesting. Most of the author's literary output appears to predate WWII, however, he was nominated for a Nobel Prize in 1965 before his death in 1968. It is not clear to me when these stories were originally written. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 335 pages

307 Poe, Edgar Allan The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe - the Book-Lover's Arnheim Edition - Ten Volumes With a Critical Introduction by Charles F. Richardson
G. P. Putnam's Sons 1902 Limited/Numbered Edition Hardcover Very Good in Good dust jacket Illustrated by Coburn, Frederick Simpson
These books are in very good condition with spine and gilt tanning/fading to a more or lesser degree across volumes, some corner bumps and rubbing, slight foxing and soiling, and a small abrasion to the lower corner of volume V - the slight board abrasion is more noticeable when the book is open. Overall condition of binding is very good with NO instances of broken or compromised gutters -- no splits in endpapers. Please see photos of books for detailed views of defects. The oilskin jackets are in good condition with soiling, minor spoting, and edgewear. Volume V has an abrasive tear on the lower front board corner corresponding to the area of slight damage to the Volume V board corner. I believe these are original since they are labelled and numbered, however, I saw no other listings of these editions mentioning the jackets. ; What a wonderful set for the Poe admirer! You are buying a limited numbered ten volume edition of Poe's works - number 55 of 500 sets produced in 1902. Each book is numbered and the publishers say it is a signed edition - I suppose because of the G. P. Putnam's Sons cursive stamp at the bottom of the numbering. Each book contains striking illustrations by Coburn capturing the eerie tone of the tale or poem. As mentioned above, I found no other sets with dustjackets! The books are in remarkable condition and would make a welcome addition to a serious bibliophile's collection. ; B&W Illustrations; 8vo 8" - 9" tall

345 Seredy, Kate & Thompson, Blanche Jennings Bible Children Stories from the Bible
Dodd, Mead & Co 1937 First Edition (?) Hardcover Good+ in Good dust jacket
This may be a stated first edition. While the book states it is published by Dodd Mead, the DJ indicates that it is an old Grosset & Dunlap reprint -- so it is unclear to me whether this book is a first edition and the DJ came from another book. The book is in good plus shape with minor corner and edge/shelf wear and tanned pages. The DJ, now protected in a poly cover, has small tears, wrinkles, and edge wear. ; The color lithography in this insprirational child's book is darling. This would make a terrific gift for Kate Seredy collectors. Seredy, a predecessor to Tasha Tudor, evokes many of the same emotions (in us) . Please contact us for photos! ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall

346 Shankland, Robert Steve Mather of the National Parks
Alfred A. Knopf 1951 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Very Good in Good+ dust jacket
The DJ, now protected in a poly cover, is in good shape with minor edge wear, edge tears, soiling, chipping (most pronounced at top and bottom spine edges - and about a 1 by 1 inch chip on the bottom left edge at the fold affecting NO printing or images) , and a $4.00 penned price next to the $4.00 price originally printed on this unclipped dustjacket. This book is in very good condition with slight shelf wear and a bookplate neatly pasted inside the front cover on the blank page facing the front board. ; This book features an introduction by Gilbert Grosvenor, an index, and bibliography. From the front of the dustjacket: "The stirring story of big mountains and big politics - of big trees and big business - and of the life of a remarkable American, Stephen T. Mather." A follower of Theodore Roosevelt in the field of resource conservation, he came to Washington to fix the national parks in 1915 for the Secretary of the Interior and in 1916, Woodrow Wilson signed the bill authorizing the National Parks Service. This book had three pieces of ephemera in it which comes with the book. The first is a one page magazine profile of Mather under the headline "The National Wildlife Foundation's Conservation Hall of Fame." The second is a news release from the Department of the Interior dated April 15, 1969 announcing the dedication of Mather Gorge on the Potomac River in Great Falls, Virginia. The third is a piece talking about the conservationist exclusions covering the Scapegoat Wilderness in Montana. I believe it was printed near the time President Nixon signed the bill in the summer of 1972. This piece is fascinating - handwritten and hand penned illustrations aimed at claiming a political victory for conservationists. ; B&W Photographs; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 326 pages

367 Stockman, David The Triumph of Politics Why the Reagan Revolution Failed
Harper & Row 1986 First Edition Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
Whatever your political leanings, this book is an interesting perspective inside the Reagan White House. Stockman was considered a turncoat by the right and a hero by the media and the left in 1986 when the book came out. We believe that history's judgement on the Reagan presidency, while still undoubtedly evolving, is generally positive -- primarily because the crushing stagflation stopped, gasoline price woes dampened, and the cold war ended. Bipartisan relationships and deals have undoubtedly influenced this judgement. Tax policy and budget deficits, still vociferously debated today, were pivotal in the Reagan on attack these problems. Stockman's judgement in 1986 was generally negative. Is history's positive judgement correct? Or is Stockman's verdict more correct? The book and DJ are in very good shape with no obvious flaws. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 422 pages
