" We googled it and got an answer from the eminent expert Jon Breen, whose stories we have also enjoyed. This book is in very good condition with slight shelf wear. The DJ, now protected in a poly cover, has significant edge wear, chipping, rubbing, and minor soiling. ; The Erle Stanley Gardner book club started in the 40's or 50's. In the 1960's, Walter J. Black changed the book design and had the book club issue one Perry Mason novel and one Donald Lam and Bertha Cool (A. A. Fair) novel in the same book. This is an example of that later edition published for Black's broader interest Detective Book Club. Want even more? This book has two fun Perry Mason novels. Did you know that Gardner also wrote under the name of A. A. Fair? The Lam/Cool books are often compared to Rex Stout's Wolfe/Goodwin characters.
