The binding is tight and the inside is clean and slightly tanned. ; This nineteenth century cookbook is a snapshot in culinary writing history. As was the custom, it is written in lively prose without offset ingredient lists. One example of the unique information presented in the book falls under Mallery's Yale Salad when Murrey quotes the poem that Colonel Garrick Mallery read at the Yale Alumni annual dinner in Washington DC on January 30, 1878. It occupies over 2 pages. Here would be an interesting game: Give two people the poem and instruct them to make the salad. Have the chefs work alone.
