The DJ, now protected in a poly cover, is in good shape with minor edge wear, edge tears, soiling, chipping (most pronounced at top and bottom spine edges - and about a 1 by 1 inch chip on the bottom left edge at the fold affecting NO printing or images) , and a $4.00 penned price next to the $4.00 price originally printed on this unclipped dustjacket. This book is in very good condition with slight shelf wear and a bookplate neatly pasted inside the front cover on the blank page facing the front board. ; This book features an introduction by Gilbert Grosvenor, an index, and bibliography. From the front of the dustjacket: "The stirring story of big mountains and big politics - of big trees and big business - and of the life of a remarkable American, Stephen T. Mather." A follower of Theodore Roosevelt in the field of resource conservation, he came to Washington to fix the national parks in 1915 for the Secretary of the Interior and in 1916, Woodrow Wilson signed the bill authorizing the National Parks Service. This book had three pieces of ephemera in it which comes with the book. The first is a one page magazine profile of Mather under the headline "The National Wildlife Foundation's Conservation Hall of Fame." The second is a news release from the Department of the Interior dated April 15, 1969 announcing the dedication of Mather Gorge on the Potomac River in Great Falls, Virginia. The third is a piece talking about the conservationist exclusions covering the Scapegoat Wilderness in Montana. I believe it was printed near the time President Nixon signed the bill in the summer of 1972. This piece is fascinating - handwritten and hand penned illustrations aimed at claiming a political victory for conservationists. ; B&W Photographs; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 326 pages
